Uma Amizade Duradoura: Over 500 Years of Enduring Friendship. A Talk by Francisco Vaz Patto, Ambassador of Portugal to the Kingdom of Thailand

 

In commemoration of the quincentenary celebration of the first ever pact between Siam and a Western power, H.E. Francisco Vaz Patto, Ambassador of Portugal to the Kingdom of Thailand, will present an overview of the events leading up to the Pact of Friendship and Trade instituted in 1518. Ambassador Vaz Patto will also explore the many ways in which this peaceful, long-lasting and positive relationship has impacted the history, commerce and culture of both Thailand and Portugal.

His Excellency Francisco Vaz Patto is a Law Graduate from the Catholic University of Lisbon, the same institution that later awarded him a post-graduate degree in European Studies. After joining Portugal’s Foreign Service in 1990, he has served in postings to Bonn, Brussels, Berlin and Luanda. In 2004 he headed the European Institutions Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lisbon and the following year he was nominated Advisor to the Secretary of State for National Defense and Sea Affairs at the Ministry of Defence in Lisbon. Between 2006 and 2013 H. E.Vaz Patto served as Chief of Cabinet to the Secretary of State for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lisbon, in New York as Political Coordinator of the Permanent Mission of Portugal at the United Nations and as Director-General for Administration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lisbon. In 2015 he was appointed Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand. Over the years, His Excellency has been honoured with a number of commendations, including the Grand Cross of the Merit Order (Portugal), as Knight Commander of the Honorary Order (Federal Republic of Germany) and as Knight Commander of the Honorary Order of Lithuania.
