News from the 90s: Bangkok 1890-1899. A Talk by Steve Van Beek

The 1890s were a pivotal decade for Thailand and the world. With his new book, News from the 90s, Steve Van Beek takes us back 120 years to an era that played out each afternoon in the pages of the Bangkok Times newspaper. Revealed is a vivid city with a dynamic populace who displayed a profound engagement with events, a fascination with novelty, and a hope for the new century. The reporters of the period brought it alive with perceptive writing leavened by droll humor. Listen to people much like ourselves telling in their own words the challenges of grappling with a complex world.

Mr. Steve Van Beek is the author of 27 books on Asian cultural topics and rivers, resident in Thailand since 1969. His best-known book, Bangkok Then and Now, is a companion volume to News from the 90s. When he isn’t perched behind a desk, he is sitting in a kayak, exploring remote rivers. He is a Life Member of the Society and once served on its board.
