THAI TEXTILE SOCIETY
AND THE SIAM SOCIETY UNDER ROYAL PATRONAGE

PRESENT

Antique Court Textiles. A Talk by Sakchai Guy

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Mr Sakchai Guy, editor-in-chief of Lips magazine, is a multitalented person who is known for his fashion photography as well as of royal portraits and those of high-ranking officials. Another interest and talent of his is flower arranging, some designed for society cremations and exhibitions. His passion is collecting antique textiles, having some of the best existing pieces in Thailand. These include large lengths of cloth dating back to the late Ayutthaya period of about 250 years ago. Measuring around four meters, these were made on the Coromandel Coast of Southern India to Thai designs, with detailed hand painting of typical lattice designs and mythical figures. The designs on the textiles indicate that they were made for royalty, probably to be worn as jong kraben. These pieces, however, are well preserved and most likely have not been worn. It is a true treat to see such fine textiles as those of Sakchai’s private collection, not to be seen elsewhere so readily.
