Concert to Celebrate the Circumnavigation of the World
by Magellan and Elcano (1519-1522)

By Grand Opera Thailand
Thursday 26 September 2019 at 8pm at The Siam Society

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the circumnavigation of the world by Fernão de Magalhães and Juan Sebastián Elcano, a series of concerts have been organised by the Embassies of Spain and Portugal, with the support of the European Delegation in Thailand, and the Siam Society.

Due to this voyage many changes took place (advances in science, commerce and communication; rejection of the flat earth theory; etc) and the world became more interconnected. The first circumnavigation had also an impact on the arts of that period, and particularly on music.

This first concert of the series will present a mix of sacred and secular music, as well as some exciting dances, all of them influenced by the Renaissance and European humanism.  From Spain and Portugal, the music expanded to the new territories and enriched in its contact with South America, Africa and Asia.

Some of the Spanish and Portuguese composers featured in the concert are:
José Marín, Juan Hidalgo, Alonso Mudarra, Cristóbal Morales, Antonio de Cabezón, Juan del Encina,
Francisco Guerrero, Juan Anchieta, Manuel de Zumaya, Gaspar Fernandes, Manuel Correira Do Campo,
Carlos Seixas, Francisco António de Almeida

This event is free of charge. A reception will be held at 7.30pm before the concert begins.
