Leader: Khun Euayporn Kerdchouay, Senior Consultant of the Siam Society

Prachin Buri is situated on the Prachin River and was an important port and commercial center at least from the time of the Mons of Dvaravati, and later under Khmer rule. The surrounding area has provided archaeological evidence of settled population since neolithic times. It is now a quiet, small provincial capital in the center of a rich rice-growing area. The distance from Bangkok to Prachin Buri is only 135 km. There is little of interest in the town except for the excellent Prachin Buri National Museum, which is housing in a modern building. On the ground floor are displayed objects found at Dong Si Maha Phot and other archaeological sites in the area. These include a superb Dvaravati image of the Buddha, three magnificent figures of Vishnu, early lintels of Koh Ker style, beautiful relief in the Baphuon style, the remarkable lintels in the style of Sambor Prei Kuk and more. The upper floor of the museum is devoted to sculptures of all periods from Dvaravati to Rattanakosin and contains an important display of Sawankhalok ceramics and other pottery found in the sea of the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand.

The group will also visit importance temples and some of the archaeological sites in the area. The bus will leave from the Siam Society at 8.00 a.m. and expect to return to the society at about 8.00 p.m.
