Study Trip

A visit to lesser known temples in Thonburi

Sunday, 30 September 2018
Leader: Mr. Euayporn Kerdchouay, Senior Consultant

Once Bangkok had been founded as the new capital of Siam in 1782 the old capital of Thonburi became something of a rural back water. A place for old temples, old settlements, orchards, canals and marshy countryside. Today, there are said to be about 185 temples and they are widely scattered in the districts of Bang Phat, Bangkok Noi, Klong San, Taling Chan, Thonburi, Phasi Chareon, Chom Thong and neighboring areas. Thonburi in general has retained many of its waterways. The earliest maps of Thonburi, dating from the latter half of 19th century, show a very modest sized township. A day trip to visit many interesting temples in Thonburi and the West Bank is always a delightful experience.

Under the leadership of Khun Euayporn Kerdchouay, the Siam Society will arrange a study trip for members to visit Wat Ratchasittaram, Wat Molee Lokayaram, Wat Bubparam, Wat Sangkrajai, Wat Thong Thammachat and Wat Thong Noppakun on Sunday 30 September. The mini-bus (van) will depart from the Siam Society at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to return to the Siam Society on the same day at 6:30 p.m.
