A journey to prehistoric root of culture and society in central Thailand

Visiting prehistoric sites of various ages in Lopburi and Saraburi provinces, plus a new exhibition on prehistory of Lopburi

The central region of Thailand is rich in archaeological resources. Archaeological research during the past decade has revealed a vast number of sites and has unearthed large numbers of archaeological remains, elucidating the significance of the region as a hub of culture and civilization. This study trip will bring to light various kinds of evidence and sites dating from Neolithic to the Iron Age, provides intimate looks at new and astonishing artifacts left by prehistoric people.

Dr. Thanik Lertcharnrit is an Associate Professor of archaeology and full-time faculty member at the Department of Archaeology, Silpakorn University. He earned his BA with honors in archaeology from the Department of Archaeology, Silpakorn University in Bangkok, MA and PhD degrees from the Department of Anthropology, Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, USA. During the past 30 years, he has done archaeological research and excavations of prehistoric sites in central Thailand, and has published numerous articles on the subject.

 

The tentative programme will be as follows:

7:30 a.m. Depart Bangkok from the Siam Society.
Morning: Visit archaeological sites from late Neolithic Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age in Ban Pong Takob, Wang Muang district (three in one stop).
  Then proceed to Ban Pong Manao archaeological site in Phatthana Nikhom district. See tombs and burial ground from the Iron Age and ancient artefacts in the museum.
  Proceed to Ban Sab Jumpa, Tha Luang district. Visit the ancient city of Sab Jumpa , Museum and see the field of Sirindhorn Champi flower
Noon: Picnic lunch will be provided in Sab Jumpa site.
Afternoon: Proceed to Ban Phrom Thin Tai archaeological site in Khok Samrong district Visit the excavation site and Ban Phrom Thin Tai local museum.
  Proceed to King Narai National Museum in Mueang Lopburi district, visit its exhibition halls specifically a renovated prehistoric room.
4:30 p.m. Depart Lopburi for Bangkok.
8:00 p.m. Arrive at The Siam Society.

Booking

The contribution of Baht 2,700 (Baht 3,200 for non-members) will cover transportation, meals as mentioned in the programme entrance fee and other costs incurred to make this trip possible. There is a 4% surcharge for credit/debit card payment to cover bank charges. Please pay by cash or cheque payable to “The Siam Society”. Alternatively, you can deposit/transfer the money to the Siam Society travel account at Thai Military Bank, Asoke Branch saving account no.053-2-18000-7. Please fax or e-mail the deposit or transfer docket to us.
