Study Trip

A visit to Mae Chaem, Khun Yuam and Mae Hong Son

Friday 6 – Sunday 8 December 2019
Leader: Mr. Euayporn Kerdchouay

Mae Chaem district is small district situated about 150 km west of Chiang Mai surrounded by Doi Inthanon National Park and Op Luang National Park. About 30-40 years ago this area was isolated and inaccessible. Today, Mae Cheam is still little known to most visitors to northern Thailand. The cultural heritage which enriches this isolated community includes several rural and charming northern style wooden temples and unique traditional textiles. The town is very quiet and peaceful, with stunning views and a small river that runs through it and relatively unspoiled.

Khun Yuam is a small town located about 68 km south of Mae Hong Son. There are a few interesting old Burmese-style temples. According to the local history, this area was once used as a working place for gathering log for export to Moulmein in Lower Myanmar during 19th century. One of the famous natural attractions of this district is the Bua Tong field at Doi Mae U-Kho (wild sun flowers). It is regarded as one of the biggest and most beautiful Bua Tong fields in Thailand.

Mae Hong Son has long been isolated from the outside world. It was a small and insignificant outpost of the Kingdom of Lan Na, and most of its inhabitants were engaged in the felling of the teak trees that abound in the dense forest surrounding the town. After 1830 the vassal prince of Chiang Mai made use of it as a centre for the capture and training of elephants, and it grew in size and importance to make of a new province in 1910. Most of the populations of the province are now either Thai Yai (Shan), or former members of one of the hill tribes.  There is strong Burmese influence in the monastery architecture (late 19th century).  Today, Mae Hong Son is one of the dream destinations for visitors, attracted by spectacular scenery and valuable heritages. This period is a perfect time to visit this province.
